What are the main Denmark Post (PostNord) services?
PostNord is Denmark's largest postal company and, since 1 January 2026, a parcel operator rather than a letter operator. Its Danish letter business was discontinued at the end of 2025, and nationwide distribution of ordinary letters passed to dao, an independent Danish company. What PostNord Denmark still runs is parcels, delivered to a home address, to a staffed collection point or to a self-service parcel locker, together with valuable consignments and registered letters sent abroad. Business freight and contract logistics sit on the same network. The Danish operating company is registered as Post Danmark A/S, which is why English sources still call it Denmark Post.
What left PostNord Denmark at the end of 2025
PostNord discontinued its Danish mail business at the end of 2025, and the fourth quarter of that year was the last period in which it delivered letters in Denmark. Trafikstyrelsen, the Danish authority that licenses and supervises postal companies, sets the cut-off as 1 January 2026 in the phrase PostNord stopper på brevområdet, meaning PostNord stops in the letter area. The group reported mail volumes down 14 percent across full-year 2025 and down 12 percent in the fourth quarter alone, followed by declines of 18 percent in each of the first two quarters of 2026.
The Group's income declined mainly as a result of the ongoing transition in Denmark, where the Danish mail business was discontinued at the end of 2025, which has resulted in lost synergies in Denmark between the parcel business and the previous mail business.
PostNord, second quarter 2026 results, 16 July 2026
This is a structural change to the Danish market rather than a temporary suspension. A letter product a Danish sender used in 2024 is not a PostNord product in 2026, and no PostNord stamp, counter or postbox handles ordinary domestic letters. Any description that lists Danish letter classes under PostNord is describing an arrangement that ended, which is the single most common error in older material about this operator.
Who carries Danish letters now, and what PostNord kept
dao took over nationwide letter distribution in Denmark on 1 January 2026, covering ordinary letters, registered letters and court service letters. Trafikstyrelsen's guidance for senders sets out two ways to post an ordinary letter: dropping it into a red dao postbox at a daoSHOP point, or ordering daoPICKUP, a paid collection from the sender's own address. dao handles rekommanderede breve, meaning registered letters, and forkyndelsesbreve, meaning letters that formally serve legal documents, across the whole country at uniform prices. On its own site dao describes delivering pakker, breve, magasiner og aviser hver dag, hele året, that is parcels, letters, magazines and newspapers every day, all year, working at night and in the early morning hours.
PostNord did not leave the Danish market. It retained delivery of værdiforsendelser, meaning valuable consignments, inside Denmark and to and from other countries, and it still handles registered letters sent abroad. Ordinary outgoing international letters now travel on dao's own international stamps rather than on Danish PostNord stamps, and PostNord refunds unused stamps for a limited period after the changeover. Trafikstyrelsen publishes dao's customer service number, 72 33 08 50, staffed 08:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 16:00 at weekends.

Eight item types cover nearly everything a Danish household or small business sends, and three of them are still PostNord's. The table allocates each one using the split published by Trafikstyrelsen together with dao's own service description.

The parcel business PostNord Denmark kept
Parcels are now the whole of PostNord Denmark's consumer-facing offer, and group parcel volumes grew 12 percent across 2025. Volumes rose 11 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025 and a further 9 percent in the second quarter of 2026, against group net sales of SEK 9,223 million and operating income of SEK 189 million in that quarter. PostNord stated the reorientation plainly when it published its 2025 full-year figures.
Going forward, PostNord Denmark will be fully focused on developing its parcel business, so that it can offer Danish customers and consumers the best possible solutions.
PostNord, full-year 2025 results, 5 February 2026
The practical consequence for a Danish recipient is that the network is now sized and scheduled around parcels rather than around a daily letter round. PostNord's full-year 2025 statement describes the closure as carried out with respect for the Danish people, customers and employees, and names the loss of shared letter and parcel routes as the main drag on Danish income.
Three ways a PostNord parcel reaches its recipient
PostNord delivers parcels through three channels: to the recipient's address, to a staffed collection point, and to a self-service parcel locker. The locker channel is the one the company is actively expanding, and it describes its parcel locker network as a complement to its other delivery options rather than as a replacement for them. Home delivery closes the tracking record at the recipient's own address. A collection point is a retail counter where the parcel waits a fixed number of days before it goes back to the sender.
Lockers change the timing rather than the route. The parcel is scanned into a compartment, the recipient is sent a code, and pickup happens outside shop opening hours. The locker rollout is one of two capital programmes PostNord named in its 2026 reporting, the other being a new parcel terminal at Timrå in northern Sweden due to be operational in 2028. Both are Nordic network investments, so their effect on Danish delivery timing is indirect rather than immediate.
Which of these produce a tracking number
Parcels produce a usable tracking number and ordinary letters do not, and that split survived the change of operator unchanged. Of the 8 item types in the table above, 3 carry an item identifier a recipient can type into a tracking field: the parcel row and the 2 registered rows. An ordinary domestic letter posted in a red dao postbox has no barcode and generates no scan events, so there is nothing to look up. dao offers Track and Trace on the items it numbers, indexed by the reference number on the label.
A tracking number identifies one physical item and follows it across every handover, which is why the same number stays valid whether PostNord, dao or a foreign operator is holding the item at that moment. Parcels into and out of Denmark
Cross-border parcels are reported in three separate buckets under EU law: domestic, inbound cross-border and outbound cross-border. That split exists because Regulation (EU) 2018/644 on cross-border parcel delivery services, adopted on 18 April 2018 and applicable from 22 May 2018, requires providers to report turnover, staff numbers and parcel counts to their national regulator broken down that way. For a Danish recipient the practical effect is that an inbound parcel is handled by a foreign operator until it enters Denmark and by PostNord or another Danish carrier afterwards, and the handover is where the scan pattern changes.
Customs is the second cross-border variable, and it applies to goods arriving from outside the EU rather than to shipments moving inside it. A parcel stopped for import formalities sits with an authority rather than with the carrier, and the tracking record reports the stop without explaining it; that stage is covered in what customs clearance means on tracking. Outgoing mail is where the general answer splits: registered letters sent abroad remain PostNord's, while ordinary international letters need dao's international stamps.
Business, freight and contract logistics
PostNord's Danish business offer runs on the same parcel network, priced by contract rather than at a counter. The investments named in its 2026 reporting are capacity and technology programmes, including the Timrå terminal scheduled for 2028 and continued expansion of the Nordic parcel locker network, both directed at the stated goal of becoming the leading parcel and logistics operator in the Nordic region. Group operating income was SEK 189 million in the second quarter of 2026, with adjusted operating income of SEK 239 million, which is the financial envelope those programmes run inside.
Business senders feel the letter closure more concretely than consumers do. Invoices, statements and notices that used to travel as PostNord letters now travel as dao letters or as digital equivalents, and legally required service of documents runs through dao's forkyndelsesbreve. A supply contract signed before 2026 that names PostNord as the letter carrier names a service the company no longer sells, and the 27 licensed operators on the regulator's register are where the replacement has to be sourced.
How the Danish postal market is supervised
Trafikstyrelsen licenses and supervises postal companies in Denmark, and its published register listed 27 licensed operators when it was last updated on 6 October 2025. The register names Post Danmark A/S, trading as PostNord, at Hedegaardsvej 88, 2300 København S under CVR number 26663903, and Dansk Avis Omdeling A/S, trading as dao, at Islandsvej 1, 7100 Vejle under CVR number 26063892. Both are recorded with nationwide coverage for blade, magasiner, aviser, breve og pakker, meaning periodicals, magazines, newspapers, letters and parcels. Licensed operators must carry out measurements of their own service compliance at least once a year.
The reporting duties on parcel carriers come from EU law, and the smallest operators are exempt from them.
Paragraphs 1 to 5 shall not apply to any parcel delivery service provider which had over the previous calendar year on average fewer than 50 persons working for it and involved in the provision of parcel delivery services in the Member State in which that provider is established, unless that provider is established in more than one Member State.

Providers above that 50-person threshold file public tariff lists by 31 January each year and annual turnover and volume statistics by 30 June. The regulation is published in full on EUR-Lex, and the Danish register of licensed operators is published by Trafikstyrelsen.
What PostNord Denmark gets confused with
Four names circulate for what are three separate legal entities, and mixing them up sends a query to the wrong operator. The most common error since 1 January 2026 is treating dao as a PostNord subsidiary, when it is an independent company that took over a role PostNord gave up.

PostNord Denmark is also not interchangeable with PostNord's Swedish, Norwegian or Finnish operations. The letter closure applies to Denmark alone, and each country sets its own product range and delivery standards, so a Swedish PostNord product description is not a description of the Danish offer.
Where to check a Danish shipment now
The operator that issued the number is the operator to ask, and since 1 January 2026 that is a two-way split rather than a single address. A parcel number, a valuable consignment or a registered letter sent abroad belongs to PostNord; an ordinary or registered domestic letter and any court service letter belongs to dao, on 72 33 08 50.
