Where do I find my tracking number?

A tracking number is created at the moment a shipping label is produced, so it reaches the recipient through whoever produced that label: the seller, the marketplace, the fulfilment warehouse, or the post office counter that accepted the item. Six sources account for nearly every case: the dispatch or shipping confirmation email, the order page inside the shop or marketplace account, the lodgement receipt printed at a counter, the calling card left after a missed delivery attempt, an SMS or app notification, and the carrier account that bought the label. International postal items carry a 13-character identifier in the form AB123456789CD. An order that has not been dispatched has no tracking number at all, because the label behind it does not exist yet.

Who creates the number, and why a carrier cannot look it up by name

Every tracking number is generated when a shipping label is produced, and one label produces exactly one identifier. The party that buys the label owns that identifier first: a retailer, a third-party fulfilment centre, a marketplace shipping tool, or a counter clerk at a post office. Carriers receive the number as part of the label data, not as something they invent on arrival.

Carrier databases are indexed on the identifier rather than on a recipient name or a delivery address. That is why a support line can rarely retrieve a parcel from an address alone, and why the route to a missing number runs back to the sender rather than forward to the carrier. The identifier is the only key that both systems share.

An order split across 2 boxes produces 2 identifiers, 1 per label, even when a single confirmation email announces both. Multi-piece consignments behave the same way in business shipping, where a consignment reference groups several parcel numbers that each move and scan independently. A recipient chasing one box of a two-box order needs the number printed on that box, not the consignment reference above it.

What each source calls the number, and when it turns up there

Six sources cover almost every tracking number a recipient will ever need, and each one labels it differently. The wording changes by operator and by country, but the position on the document is stable: the tracking identifier sits next to the carrier name or directly under a barcode, while commercial references sit next to prices, dates and product lines.

The lodgement receipt matters most in the one case the other five do not cover: an item posted in person, where the sender is also the person now trying to track it. Where the number sits on the parcel itself

The identifier is printed on the shipping label in human-readable characters directly beneath or beside the barcode that encodes it, which makes the parcel its own last copy of the number. That matters after delivery, when the email has gone and a return, a claim or a dispute still needs the reference. A photograph of the label taken before the packaging is discarded preserves it.

A courier label commonly carries more than 1 barcode, and only one of them repeats the tracking identifier as readable text. Routing and sortation barcodes encode postcode and depot data and are printed without a matching human-readable string, while the sender's own reference sits in a small field labelled REF or similar. On international postal items the S10 barcode block is the one to read, because it is the identifier both the origin and the destination operator recognise.

Labels issued over a counter are commonly produced with a detachable customer copy carrying the same identifier, which is what the lodgement receipt in the table above records. Where that copy has been lost but the item is still in hand, the label on the item and the counter copy hold the same value.

How to tell the tracking number apart from the other references beside it

A single dispatch email routinely carries three or four different reference numbers, and only one of them is accepted by a carrier's tracking form. The order reference identifies the purchase inside the shop's system and is normally the number quoted in the email subject line. The invoice or receipt number identifies the payment document. The tracking identifier is the one printed beside the carrier's name, under a barcode, or behind a "track" link.

Format is the second test. Items exchanged between postal operators use the UPU S10 scheme, which fixes the identifier at 13 characters: a two-letter service indicator, an eight-digit serial number, one check digit, and a two-letter country code, as in RR287043775IN (S10 UPU standard, accessed July 2026). Domestic courier identifiers do not follow S10 and vary by operator in both length and character set, which is why length alone never proves a number is valid.

Two further habits separate the identifier from its neighbours. Tracking identifiers are stored as one unbroken run of characters, and any spacing shown on screen is presentational grouping, whereas order and invoice references frequently carry hyphens, dates or branch codes as part of the value itself. The tracking identifier is also the reference the carrier prints beside its own barcode on the label, while the order reference belongs to the shop's packing slip. How long after checkout the number exists

The identifier comes into existence at dispatch, not at checkout, and most retailers generate the label 1 to 3 business days after the order is placed (estimate). Until that happens there is nothing to look up, and an order page that shows no tracking section is reporting an accurate state rather than hiding a number.

Once the label exists, the number is live in the carrier's system before the parcel is. Statuses worded as "Label created", "Shipping information received" or "Electronic data received" mean the label data arrived electronically and no physical scan has followed. That gap commonly runs 24 to 72 hours (estimate), and it is longer for items handed over at a collection point rather than collected from a warehouse.

A number that returns "not found" during the first day after dispatch is behaving normally. The same result a week after dispatch is not, and at that point the question moves from where the number is to whether the item was ever lodged.

When no number has been provided at all

Three distinct situations produce the same complaint, and they need different actions. The service may carry no tracking at all, the seller may hold a number and not have sent it, or nothing may have been dispatched. Untracked letter post and the cheapest economy parcel services are not barcoded end to end, so no identifier exists at any point in the journey and no scan is recorded between lodgement and delivery.

Where the service is tracked, the number sits with whoever bought the label, which makes it the seller's to supply. UK consumer guidance places the delivery obligation on the retailer rather than the buyer:

The request to a seller is more likely to be answered when it names what is wanted: the carrier, the tracking identifier, and the dispatch date. Marketplace platforms hold the same three fields in the order record and can supply them when the seller does not respond.

Recovering a number after the receipt or the email is gone

A deleted confirmation email is rarely fatal, because the same identifier is stored in at least two other places: the shop's order history and the account that bought the label. Order history survives inbox cleanups, and it holds the number for as long as the order record is retained. Searching a mailbox for the carrier's name, or for the word tracking, and including the spam and promotions folders recovers most of the rest.

For an item posted in person, the counter receipt is the primary record and the only one the sender holds. Where a label was bought online, the label record inside the postal or courier account carries the same number. USPS treats these documents as interchangeable proof when an item has to be traced, listing "your USPS Tracking number(s), the mailing date from your mailing receipt, or Click-N-Ship label receipt" among the identifying information a search request needs.

That threshold is the practical deadline for recovering the number as well as the item. A search or claim opened without an identifier depends entirely on addresses and dates, which slows every step that follows.

Marketplace and cross-border parcels carry more than one number

A single cross-border marketplace order can generate three separate identifiers: the platform's own shipment reference, the international consolidator's number, and the final-mile carrier's domestic number. Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, Shein and Temu all display at least one of them on the order page, and which one is shown changes as the parcel moves.

The number visible in the first days is usually the consolidator's, and a destination operator's tracking form will not recognise it until the handover scan has taken place. Consolidators such as 4PX operate the leg between the seller's warehouse and the destination country, then pass the item to a domestic carrier that may issue a reference of its own. Where the platform never shows that second reference, the consolidator's number remains the one that works, because it is the one carried on the physical label.

Final-mile networks add the last layer. A parcel that entered a country under a postal identifier can finish its journey with a courier such as Evri, whose notifications quote its own reference. Two numbers describing one parcel is normal in that arrangement, and both resolve to the same item.

Numbers that arrive without an order: cards, texts and unrequested parcels

A tracking reference that arrives by text with no matching order is the most common shape of a delivery phishing message, and one structural check filters many of them. The S10 identifier ends in a check digit computed from its eight serial digits, so a fabricated or mistyped international number does not correspond to a real item, and many operator forms reject it on the check digit alone instead of returning an empty history.

A genuine calling card names the operator, the attempt date and the depot or access point holding the item, and its reference works on that operator's site. Any message that asks for card details to release a parcel is worth verifying by entering the number on the carrier's own site rather than following the link in the message.

Unrequested parcels are the reverse case: a real, valid tracking number attached to an account the recipient does not control. The number will track normally and still tell the recipient nothing about who sent it, because the sender's identity lives in the label data rather than in the public tracking history.

References that are not tracking numbers

Six reference types are routinely mistaken for tracking numbers, and none of them is accepted by a carrier's tracking form. Each identifies a real record, but the record belongs to a shop, a payment processor or a customs authority rather than to a parcel in a carrier's scan network.
