ELTA Courier Tracking

ELTA Courier is the express arm of Ελληνικά Ταχυδρομεία (ELTA), Greece's national postal operator, and the only Greek courier whose international express rides the Universal Postal Union's own network rather than a private partner chain. Its EMS service reaches destinations through more than 198 interconnected postal networks, while SPM, the commercial express product, is sold to 220 countries and takes shipments up to 100 kg, well beyond the 35 kg ceiling of the domestic ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ service. ELTA Courier tracking uses the same 13-character number on all of them, so a Greek export keeps one code from pickup in Athens to delivery abroad. Cyprus gets its own product, Fast Parcel Cyprus, sold by air and by sea. Inside Greece the company counts more than 1,200 service points, among them 155 ELTA Courier agencies.

ELTA Courier Tracking Number Format

An ELTA Courier tracking number is 13 characters long: two Latin letters, nine digits, then two more Latin letters. Items issued in Greece end in GR, the ISO country code of the operator that created the number.

"The number of the shipment consists of 2 Latin characters, followed by 9 digits and ending in 2 Latin characters." (ELTA Courier, Track Shipment, 2026.)

The pattern is the Universal Postal Union's S10 identifier, the scheme every UPU member post uses. The two opening letters are a service indicator, the first eight digits are a serial number, the ninth digit is a check digit calculated from the other eight, and the final two letters are the issuing country. That is why a number created for a Greek parcel reads PP123456785GR, the example ELTA prints on its own item-search page.

ELTA and its customers use several names for the same string. The Greek interface calls it the αριθμός αποστολής, the shipment number. On paper it is the voucher number, printed on the ΣΥ.ΔΕ.ΤΑ. (Συνοδευτικό Δελτίο Ταχυμεταφοράς), the Courier Accompanying Slip stuck to every domestic consignment. E-shops that integrate ELTA Courier through its web services usually label it the voucher or consignment number in the order confirmation. All of them mean the same 13-character code.

One documented exception breaks the pattern: some items that originate in Germany arrive with a 12-digit numeric barcode instead of the letters-digits-letters form, and ELTA's item search accepts it as printed.

Where to Find ELTA Courier Tracking Number

The number reaches the recipient through the sender, never through ELTA Courier directly, so the places worth checking are the ones the sender controls.

  • The ΣΥ.ΔΕ.ΤΑ. voucher taped to the parcel, in the barcode block.
  • The dispatch confirmation email or SMS from the online shop.
  • The order page of the shop that shipped the goods, usually under "shipping" or "my orders".
  • The sender's copy of the voucher, handed over at the counter when the item was posted.
  • The delivery notice left at the address after an unsuccessful attempt.

An order number is not a tracking number. Shop order references are shorter, often purely numeric, and mean nothing to ELTA's systems; only the 13-character code returns a scan history. That history stays online for a limited window, so an old number will eventually stop resolving: "The item history is available for six (6) months, from the day after deposit." (ELTA, Item Search, 2026.)

ELTA Courier Tracking Number Example

The table below sets out the number patterns seen on Greek courier and postal items. The service-indicator ranges come from the UPU S10 standard rather than from an ELTA product list, and the prefix on its own does not reliably identify which ELTA service carried the parcel.

Format or patternTypical lengthWhat it indicates
PP123456785GR13 charactersThe example ELTA publishes on its own item-search page: two letters, nine digits, country code GR.
EA-EZ, for example EE123456789GR13 charactersS10 range reserved for express mail (EMS), the international service ELTA Courier sells as EMS.
CA-CZ, for example CP065505311GR13 charactersS10 range for parcel post. The UPU recommends CV for insured parcels.
RA-RZ, for example RR123456789GR13 charactersS10 range for registered letter post, the recorded-delivery channel rather than the courier one.
LA-LZ13 charactersS10 range for tracked letter post, common on small e-commerce packets.
UA-UZ13 charactersS10 range for letter-post items that carry an identifier but no customer-facing tracking, which is why scans can be sparse.
HA-HZ13 charactersS10 range introduced for e-commerce parcels.
12 numeric digits12 charactersCommonly seen on items originating in Germany; ELTA's item search accepts the numeric barcode as printed.

ELTA Courier Tracking Status Guide

ELTA Courier records one event per barcode scan, and the tracker at elta-courier.gr runs in Greek and in English, accepting several numbers at once. ELTA's own item search takes up to five codes separated by commas and returns the same event history for postal and courier items. The stages below cover the lifecycle of a domestic consignment and of an inbound international one.

StatusDescription
Voucher issued, shipment registeredThe sender has created the ΣΥ.ΔΕ.ΤΑ. and the number exists in the system, but nobody has scanned the parcel yet. Expect no movement until the first physical scan.
Collected from senderA courier or a counter clerk has taken custody of the item. This is the first scan that proves ELTA Courier physically holds the parcel.
Arrived at sorting centreThe parcel has reached a hub and has been read on the inbound belt. Athens and Thessaloniki handle the bulk of national volume.
Departed sorting centreThe item has been loaded for the delivery region. On island routes this is where a parcel waits for the next flight or ferry sailing.
Received at delivery branchThe parcel is at the branch or agency responsible for the recipient's address and is queued for a courier round.
Out for deliveryA courier has the parcel on the vehicle for that day's round. Delivery to the door is expected the same day unless the attempt fails.
Delivery attempted, notice leftNobody was available to sign. A notice, the ειδοποιητήριο, is left at the address. ELTA Courier makes two attempts before the item is held.
Held at branch for collectionAfter the second notice the parcel waits at the branch. Collection needs the tracking number and an identity document.
Dispatched abroadAn outbound EMS or SPM item has left the Greek office of exchange for the destination country's postal or courier network.
Arrived in destination countryThe destination operator has taken over. Later scans on an outbound item come from that operator, not from ELTA.
Held for customs clearanceAn inbound non-EU item is with Greek customs. Nothing moves until duty, VAT and the clearance charge are settled.
Customs clearedCustoms has released the item and it re-enters the delivery network.
DeliveredThe recipient or an authorised person has signed. The scan carries the date and the delivering office.
Returned to senderThe item was refused, unclaimed after the holding period, or undeliverable, and is travelling back to the sender.

Why ELTA Courier Tracking Is Not Updating or Not Working

A number that returns nothing, or a scan history frozen for days, almost always has one of the following causes rather than a broken tracker.

Awaiting the first scan. A voucher created in an e-shop's back office exists before the parcel does. Until a courier collects it and reads the barcode, the number can be live in the shop's email and still return no information on elta-courier.gr. On a same-day dispatch that gap is normally hours; over a weekend it can run to two working days.

In transit between hubs. Scans happen at handover points, not continuously. A parcel that has left a sorting centre for Crete or the Dodecanese may show nothing until it is read at the destination branch, because the flight or ferry leg in between generates no event.

Customs clearance. Inbound items from outside the EU stop at the customs stage and stay there until the charges are paid. This is the longest silent period in the ELTA network and it is not a tracking fault.

Failed delivery attempt. If the courier could not hand the parcel over, the tracker moves to a notice status and then to a branch hold. The parcel is not lost; it is sitting at the delivery branch waiting to be collected or rebooked.

Wrong or incomplete number. A 13-character S10 code is the only thing ELTA's systems recognise. An order reference from the shop, a number missing the GR suffix, or one typed with a Greek letter in place of a Latin one will not resolve.

The number has expired. Event history is kept for six months from the day after posting. A number from last year is not broken, it has aged out of the database.

Genuinely delayed. When none of the above applies and the last scan is more than a few working days old, the sender is the party who can open the case, because the contract of carriage is theirs. ELTA Courier runs a dedicated compensation desk for lost and damaged items, and the FAQ below covers how to reach it.

Services and Weight Limits Compared

ELTA Courier sells four tracked products, and each carries a different weight ceiling and a different tracking depth. Volumetric weight is charged on a divisor of 5,000 for all of them except EMS, where the company states that volumetric weight does not apply.

ServiceScopeMaximum weightIndicative speedTracking
ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ (Door-to-Door)Domestic Greece, documents and parcels35 kg per itemNext business day within the same city, 1-2 business days city to cityFull scan history, signature on delivery
EMS (Express Mail Service)International, through more than 198 interconnected postal networks30 kg, with 20 kg or 23 kg ceilings for some countriesVaries by destination; ELTA states delivery times are indicative and not bindingTracked in Greece, then by the destination post on the same number
SPM (Special Priority Mail)International express, exports and imports, 220 countries100 kg per shipmentSPM Express can reach some destinations the next day; SPM Economy is the slower tier from 1 kgEnd-to-end tracking on the courier network
FPC (Fast Parcel Cyprus)Door to door to and from Cyprus, by air or by sea30 kg per itemAir: next day possible, 2-3 business days to remote areas. Sea: weekly sailing, loading Wednesdays and arriving TuesdaysOnline track and trace

Optional extras attach to the domestic product rather than the international ones: cash on delivery (αντικαταβολή), declared value above the standard liability, Saturday and holiday delivery at selected points, a timed delivery window at selected destinations, return of signed documents, and group shipments picked up once and delivered to many addresses. SPM excludes a list of war-affected destinations, among them Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Israel, Gaza, Libya and Yemen.

Delivery and Transit Times

The domestic commitment is next business day inside the same city and 1-2 business days between cities, the figures ELTA Courier publishes for ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ. They are a service commitment for ordinary destinations and should be read as estimates, not guarantees.

Greek geography is the main reason a parcel misses them. ELTA Courier maintains a separate list of δυσπρόσιτοι προορισμοί, inaccessible destinations, where the standard commitment does not apply: small islands, mountain villages and settlements reached by a single boat or a single daily bus. A parcel to Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras or Larissa moves on road and air links that run every day, while a parcel to Kastellorizo, Anafi or a village outside a Cycladic port town depends on a ferry schedule that may run a few times a week.

The Cyprus service shows how much the transport mode matters. FPC by air can deliver the next day, stretching to 2-3 business days for remote areas, while FPC by sea loads on Wednesdays and arrives on Tuesdays, with 7-8 business days quoted for remote areas. The same logic governs domestic island traffic: the air leg to Crete or Rhodes is fast, the last leg to a village on the far side of the island is not.

Branch opening hours shape the practical delivery window too. ELTA Courier gives typical hours of 08:00-20:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00-14:00 on Saturday, with variation by location, and an item that arrives after the round has left waits for the next working day.

Where an ELTA Courier Parcel Is Held and Collected

ELTA has been consolidating its post office network, and the combined ELTA and ELTA Courier network now stands at roughly 985 service points: company-run post offices, shop-in-shop agencies inside existing local businesses, and 155 ELTA Courier agencies. The consolidation has fallen on ELTA's own post offices. The shop-in-shop agencies and the 155 ELTA Courier agencies were not affected, so courier collection points are unchanged, and a courier consignment is held and collected exactly as it always was.

The counter is not where most items end up in any case. Around 92 percent of mail and 90 percent of parcels are delivered to the door rather than collected from a branch, and a courier parcel reaches a counter only when a delivery attempt fails.

When it does, the tracking record rather than local knowledge tells you where to go. ELTA Courier makes two delivery attempts; after the second the item is held, and the hold event names the branch or agency holding it, which is not necessarily the post office that used to serve the address. The branch locator on elta-courier.gr is the authoritative source for whether that point is open and what its hours are, and it is worth checking before travelling. Collection requires the 13-character number and an identity document, plus written authorisation if someone else collects on your behalf.

Two further points follow from the size of the network. A parcel to an address on the δυσπρόσιτοι προορισμοί list of inaccessible destinations may be held at the nearest point with a courier round rather than in the settlement itself, which is why an item can sit at "held at branch" while the recipient sees no notice at the door. And because the ELTA letter network and the ELTA Courier network share service points but not products, a postal item and a courier consignment addressed to the same person can be held at two different counters, each named on its own tracking event.

Failed Deliveries, Redelivery and Compensation

ELTA Courier makes two delivery attempts before a parcel is held. After the first notice the recipient contacts the branch to arrange a new attempt; after the second, the item is collected from the branch or a redelivery is requested, which may carry a charge.

Liability is capped unless it is bought up. Every shipment is covered as standard for loss or destruction up to 50 euros for documents and up to 100 euros for parcels, and higher cover comes from the ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ Δηλωμένης Αξίας declared-value option. Value above the standard cap that was never declared is not recoverable, which matters for electronics sent without extra cover.

Claims go to a dedicated desk rather than to the branch. ELTA Courier publishes a compensation line on 210 6073066 and takes complaints on 210 6073000, by email at info@elta-courier.gr and customercare@elta-courier.gr, and through the contact form on its site. Address changes on an item already in the network go in writing to customerservice@elta-courier.gr. As a licensed postal operator holding general authorisation AM 01-200, ELTA Courier is supervised by EETT, the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission, which handles consumer complaints the operator does not resolve.

Which Countries Does ELTA Courier Deliver To?

ELTA Courier international tracking covers two different reach figures, because the company sells two different international products. EMS runs through the interconnection of more than 198 postal networks, the UPU cooperative that lets a Greek express item be carried by the destination country's own post. SPM, the commercial express product, is sold to 220 countries. Domestically the parcels ride the same national infrastructure as ELTA Hellenic Post, the letter and parcel side of the same company, which handles registered mail and postal parcels rather than the courier vouchers described on this page.

Inside Greece the network reaches every region: Attica and Central Greece, Macedonia and Thrace in the north, Thessaly, Epirus, the Peloponnese, the Ionian islands, the Aegean islands and Crete. Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion, Larissa, Volos, Ioannina and Rhodes are served daily; the small islands are served on whatever transport schedule exists, which is the origin of most Greek delivery-time complaints.

The destination groups look like this:

  • Domestic: all Greek regions, including Crete, the Dodecanese, the Cyclades and the Ionian islands.
  • Europe: Cyprus, served by the dedicated FPC product, plus Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, North Macedonia and the rest of the EU.
  • North America: the United States and Canada, both large destinations for the Greek diaspora.
  • Asia Pacific: China, Japan, Singapore and Australia, another major diaspora market.
  • MENA and Africa: Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa, subject to the SPM exclusion list for war-affected destinations.

On outbound EMS items the tracking number keeps working after the parcel leaves Greece, because the destination post scans the same S10 code and returns the events. On SPM the item stays on the courier network from pickup to delivery.

Cross-Border Customs and the New EU Duty on Low-Value Parcels

The rules for parcels arriving in Greece from outside the EU changed on 1 July 2026, and any guidance written before that date is out of date. The European Union has abolished the customs-duty exemption that used to apply to consignments worth up to 150 euros and replaced it with a flat charge.

"Customs: Council agrees to levy customs duty on small parcels as of 1 July 2026." (Council of the European Union, press release, 12 December 2025.)

A temporary flat duty of 3 euros per item now applies to consignments valued up to 150 euros, and it is due to run until 1 July 2028, after which normal tariff rates take over. A separate EU-wide handling fee has been proposed but is still under negotiation, so it should not be treated as a live charge. Greek import VAT at the standard rate of 24 percent applies on top, and always did: the 150-euro figure was never a VAT exemption.

Postal and courier items still travel with a CN22 or CN23 customs declaration, and an inbound parcel that is stopped generates a customs event in the tracker plus a notification of the amounts due. On top of state taxes the operator charges its own clearance fee for presenting the item to customs. EETT, the Greek postal regulator, has been explicit that these are commercial charges rather than taxes: it does not set or control them, and the customs authority itself is AADE. The current amounts belong to ELTA's published clearance price list, which is the only reliable place to read them, and they change.

Two consequences follow for anyone tracking an inbound parcel. The customs stage is where a shipment stops moving for days, and repeatedly refreshing the tracker will not change that until the charges are paid. And a cheap order is no longer duty-free: a 12-euro item from a Chinese marketplace now attracts the flat duty, the VAT and the clearance fee, which together can exceed the price of the goods.

Marketplace Collaborations

ELTA names international marketplace collaborations as a strategic priority, with Temu and Amazon named by the company as the partnerships being pursued. That direction reflects where Greek inbound volume actually comes from: cross-border e-commerce out of China, which arrives predominantly through the postal channel rather than through private express carriers.

Parcels from AliExpress and Shein reach Greek addresses on that same postal infrastructure, handed to ELTA at the Greek office of exchange and delivered on the rounds that also carry ELTA Courier consignments. These are the shipments most affected by the July 2026 customs change, and the ones most likely to sit at the customs stage in the tracker.

Domestically the picture is competitive rather than cooperative. Skroutz, the largest Greek marketplace, bought a courier company and runs its own last-mile arm, and Shopflix is served by Courier Center, so the big Greek platforms increasingly deliver their own orders. ELTA Courier competes for the merchants outside those closed loops, a large part of the long tail of Greek e-shops that integrate its web services to print vouchers straight from an order backend. The market is crowded: EETT counts more than 700 licensed postal companies in Greece, of which six move about 65 percent of the volume.

About ELTA Courier

ELTA Courier began as ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ, the door-to-door product ELTA launched in 1987 as the first courier service offered by the Greek post. The subsidiary Ταχυμεταφορές ΕΛΤΑ Α.Ε. was incorporated in 2000 to run it as a company, operating under general authorisation AM 01-200 from EETT, the national regulator for telecommunications and post.

That corporate structure ended on 1 October 2024, when Ταχυμεταφορές ΕΛΤΑ Α.Ε. was merged by absorption into ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ ΤΑΧΥΔΡΟΜΕΙΑ Α.Ε. The parent took over all assets, licences, employment contracts, customer agreements and trademarks as universal successor. ELTA Courier survives as a brand and a service line inside ELTA rather than as a company, and management has described the merged organisation as holding second place in the Greek express market.

ELTA itself is state-owned, held entirely by Growthfund, the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations, and is being restructured under a long-running transformation programme. Courier is the growing part of the business and the line the company is investing in, and management describes the merged organisation as holding second place in the Greek express market.

That investment is visible in the network rather than on paper. The programme covers the consolidation of the post office network, 1,300 postal workers issued with tablets and portable printers so that scans are recorded at the doorstep rather than back at the branch, a 25 percent fleet renewal weighted towards electric vehicles, and smart lockers for out-of-hours collection. For a recipient the practical effects are more precise delivery and hold events in the tracker, and, where a locker is installed, a collection option that does not depend on branch opening hours.

ELTA Courier Common Questions:

How do I track an ELTA Courier parcel?

Enter the 13-character number from your voucher into the tracker on this page, or into the search box on elta-courier.gr. ELTA's own item search accepts the same code and takes up to five numbers at once, separated by commas. You need nothing else: no postcode, no surname.

What does an ELTA Courier tracking number look like?

Two Latin letters, nine digits, then two more Latin letters, thirteen characters in total. Numbers issued in Greece end in GR. ELTA publishes PP123456785GR as its own example. Some items posted in Germany instead carry a 12-digit numeric barcode.

Where do I find my ELTA Courier tracking number?

It is printed on the ΣΥ.ΔΕ.ΤΑ. voucher attached to the parcel, and the sender receives the same number when the voucher is issued. Online shops normally include it in the dispatch email and on the order page. If you only have an order reference from the shop, ask the shop for the courier number: order references do not work in ELTA's tracker.

Why is my ELTA Courier tracking not updating?

The usual reasons are that the voucher has been created but the parcel has not been collected yet, that the item is in transit between hubs and generates no scan on a ferry or flight leg, or that an inbound parcel is waiting at customs. A failed delivery attempt also freezes the visible status until the item is booked into the branch. If the last scan is more than a few working days old and none of these applies, contact the sender, who holds the contract of carriage.

Is ELTA Courier tracking down or not working?

A number that returns no information is far more often a number that has not been scanned yet than a broken tracker. Check that the code is 13 characters, that no Greek letters have crept in place of Latin ones, and that the GR suffix is there. Event history is also kept for only six months from the day after posting, so an older number will legitimately return nothing.

Does ELTA Courier still exist after the merger with ELTA?

Yes, as a brand and a service line. The company Ταχυμεταφορές ΕΛΤΑ Α.Ε. was absorbed into ELTA S.A. on 1 October 2024, and ELTA became the universal successor of its licences, contracts and trademarks. The elta-courier.gr site, the tracker and the four services (ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ, EMS, SPM and FPC) all continue under the ELTA Courier name.

Did the ELTA post office closures affect ELTA Courier collection points?

No. The consolidation applies to ELTA's own post offices. The shop-in-shop agencies and the 155 ELTA Courier agencies were not part of it, so courier collection points are unchanged. Even so, check the branch locator on elta-courier.gr before travelling: the point holding your parcel is the one named on the tracking event and on the notice left at the door, and it is not necessarily the counter you used before.

How long does ELTA Courier take to deliver in Greece?

ELTA Courier commits to next business day within the same city and 1-2 business days between cities on the ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ service. These are estimates, not guarantees. Destinations on the company's inaccessible-destinations list, which covers small islands and remote mountain settlements, take longer because they depend on ferry and bus schedules.

How many delivery attempts does ELTA Courier make?

Two. After the first unsuccessful attempt a notice is left at the address and you contact the branch to arrange a new one. After the second, the parcel is held at the branch for collection, or a redelivery can be requested, which may carry a charge.

Where is my parcel held after a failed delivery?

At the ELTA Courier branch or agency responsible for your address, which is named on the tracking event and on the notice left at the door. Bring the tracking number and an identity document. If someone else collects on your behalf, they will need written authorisation.

What is a ΣΥ.ΔΕ.ΤΑ. voucher?

Συνοδευτικό Δελτίο Ταχυμεταφοράς, the Courier Accompanying Slip, is the document attached to every domestic courier consignment in Greece. It carries the barcode and the 13-character shipment number, and it is the record of the carriage contract between the sender and ELTA Courier.

How much can I claim if ELTA Courier loses my parcel?

Standard cover is up to 50 euros for documents and up to 100 euros for parcels against loss or destruction. Higher cover requires the ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ Δηλωμένης Αξίας declared-value option, bought when the item is posted. Claims go to the compensation desk on 210 6073066 rather than to the delivery branch.

Why is my parcel from China stuck at customs?

Since 1 July 2026 the EU applies a flat customs duty of 3 euros per item on consignments worth up to 150 euros from outside the EU, replacing the old duty exemption. Greek import VAT at 24 percent applies as well, and ELTA charges its own clearance fee for presenting the item to customs. The parcel stays at the customs stage in the tracker until those amounts are settled.

How do I contact ELTA Courier customer service?

The general line is 210 6073000 and the compensation desk is 210 6073066. Complaints are taken by email at info@elta-courier.gr and customercare@elta-courier.gr. Requests to change a delivery address on an item already in the network must be sent in writing to customerservice@elta-courier.gr. Branches typically open 08:00-20:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00-14:00 on Saturday, though hours vary by location.

What is the weight limit for an ELTA Courier shipment?

35 kg per item on the domestic ΠΟΡΤΑ-ΠΟΡΤΑ service, 30 kg on EMS (lower in some countries, at 20 kg or 23 kg), 30 kg on FPC to Cyprus, and up to 100 kg per shipment on SPM. Volumetric weight is calculated on a divisor of 5,000 and does not apply to EMS.

Can I track an ELTA Courier parcel sent abroad?

Yes. Outbound EMS items keep the same S10 number after they leave Greece, and the destination post scans it and returns the events, so the history continues in the Greek tracker. SPM items stay on the courier network end to end. ELTA sells EMS through more than 198 interconnected postal networks and SPM to 220 countries.
